It only takes a minute to sign up. I am trying to format an external hard disk in Ubuntu However, after having deleted all partitions in fdisk and created a new one, and entered w to write it to disk, I get the following output:.

The disk is potentially damaged! How to figure out if there is a way to format part of the disk, or if the disk is really damaged beyond any use? I am able to access MOST of the content on the disk, so the disk cannot be that damaged.

By the looks of it you have successfully created a new partition table.

write to device failed invalid argument

The errors point to the aftermath jobs of closing the device. Since you have deleted previous partitions it cannot remove partition 1,2,3,4 because they don't exist anymore. And likewise cannot load the new table as removal of old ones failed. You should just reboot and start formatting it. To be able to answer this question, one would have to see how you went about making your changes including how fdisk was invoked. With fdisk, you can follow your progress by using the 'p' print command to view the partition table, use it to see if your commands to delete partitions and create new command 'n' partitions actually did what you thought it should.

You can create a completely new partition table with the 'o' command for a DOS type of table. Use the command 'v' to verify the table, if there are no errors, you should be able to write it out to the disk. Keep in mind, only a partition can be 'formatted'. What is your reason to redo the partition tables and format the disk? If that is the case, you should replace the disk, it won't get better. I just looked at the directions for using fdisk, that you refered to, it leaves out an important step, choosing the type of partition that you want, using the 't' command to change set the partition type.

Sw40ve upgrades

Use 83 for a "normal" linux partition, use 82 for a linux swap partition. Use the 'l' command to list the values for different OS's. You may also want to toggle whether the disk is bootable or not, using the 'a' command. Hope this helps! Ubuntu Community Ask! Sign up to join this community.

You should only be examining errno this includes calling perror if the write call failed, which it indicates by returning If the write succeeds, it leaves errno unchanged. There are three arguments to the function:. Where is the actual code not your memory of the code that does the open? Is the file descriptor returned by open the same one Comid you are trying to write onto?

Recovery Flashing Issues

If not, there's your problem. What this basically means is that something else has your serial port open for writing at the same time -- at least intermittently. USB to serial converters seem to be particularly vulnerable to this. Other serial drivers will generally only allow you to open them once. Learn more. Asked 8 years, 6 months ago.

Skeith Skeith 2, 5 5 gold badges 27 27 silver badges 51 51 bronze badges. Your perror call is after a call to some routine called move -- how do you know the error is even connected to the write call? Did you even bother to look at the write man page? You can google all you want, but the answer is somewhere in man write.

Ernest -- yes, he doesn't know for sure, but as a point of information errno does not change unless his call to move calls some other system-level function. Pete the man page does not have the invalid argument error in its error list. Ernest i have tried it without the move call and it the same and the move call does not fail so it would not set errno. Active Oldest Votes. Skeith: If the write call succeeds it will leave errno unchanged.

If it is from the write call, then you are passing it a bad file descriptor number - perhaps Seg isn't what you think it is, or perhaps that array has been overwritten by a stray write elsewhere. Set a breakpoint in WriteComm and print the value of Comid. So one of those three is wrong. So put a printf before the call to write and see which one or two; or three is wrong. That is the likely error in this mashup.I powered off the phone as it was taking too long to clear cache partition.
